SAN FRANCISCO - For the fourth straight year, the Emerald Bowl will be played and televised nationally in prime time by ESPN.
The 8th annual Emerald Bowl will be played on Saturday, December 26, at 5:00 p.m. PST (8:00 p.m. Eastern) at AT&T Park in downtown San Francisco.
The announcement, from Emerald Bowl Executive Director Gary Cavalli, also means that the game will be played on Saturday for the second straight year.
The only post-season game matching teams from the Pacific-10 Conference and Atlantic Coast Conference, the Emerald Bowl has recorded sellouts in two of the last three years and become one of the highest rated bowl games on television.
"This year's game date and time is a reflection of the growth and increasing popularity of the Emerald Bowl," Cavalli said. "We've proven over the last three years that our Pac-10 vs. ACC matchup is extremely attractive to football fans in the Bay Area and television audiences throughout the country.
"A Saturday, primetime kickoff should help us deliver another strong crowd and another big TV rating for our partner conferences and our title sponsor, Diamond Foods."
This past year's Emerald Bowl was record-setting in several respects. A sellout, standing-room-only 42,268 spectators saw California defeat Miami 24-17 in a contest that wasn't decided until the final two minutes.
The matchup produced a 4.63 rating, second highest of all ESPN 2008 bowl telecasts, and eighth overall in ESPN history dating back nearly two decades.
"After its highest-rated game ever in 2008, we are very pleased that the Emerald Bowl will be televised in primetime on Saturday, Dec. 26th," said ESPN Vice President, Programming Dave Brown.
"The first Saturday after Christmas has become a tremendous day to generate big ratings, and two great teams from the Pac-10 and ACC playing in the Emerald Bowl will certainly help us carry on that success. We look forward to showcasing the city of San Francisco and we look forward to working with the Emerald Bowl to make this year's game even better."
The Emerald Bowl currently owns the #8 and #19 most-watched bowl telecasts in ESPN history.
Last year's Cal-Miami game represented the second sellout in the past three years. The game between Florida State and UCLA in 2006 set a then-record 40,331 attendance, and a 4.5 rating.
The Emerald Bowl tie-ins with the Pacific-10 Conference and the Atlantic Coast Conference began in 2006. Since then, such ACC powers as Georgia Tech, Florida State, Maryland and Miami have all visited San Francisco. The Pac-10 has sent UCLA, Oregon State and Cal to the Emerald.
Diamond Foods, Inc. has been the Emerald Bowl's title sponsor since the Bowl's inception in 2002.
Over its seven-year history, the Emerald Bowl has been a major revenue generator for San Francisco's hospitality industry. The Bowl had overall economic impact of over $85 million since its inception in 2002. Once again, the Saturday game date for 2009 should greatly enhance the financial forecast in both the City and County of San Francisco.
The Emerald Bowl was known as the Diamond Walnut San Francisco Bowl in 2002 and 2003. The game changed its name to the Emerald Bowl in 2004 at the behest of Diamond Foods. Emerald is the company's snack brand division.
Emerald snack products are available in supermarkets, drugstores, club stores, convenience stores and mass merchandise outlets throughout the United States.
